Today we live in an era characterized by high-Q technology and microgravity science on the Earth managed by observations and experiments in Outer Space. We are in the midst of a GeoSpace Science revolution. Every nation is keen to partake the enormous benefits accruable by pursuing developments in GeoSpace Science. The Space Science uses new space-age technologies like data visualizations, spatial data management analysis tools and remotely-sensed imaging and satellite photography to greatly advance scientific understanding of Earth and its systems.  With the launch of Earth resources satellites in polar and geostationary orbits around the Earth, the decade of 90’s has witnessed a wide spectrum of applications in disparate fields subject to the need and quality of imagery datasets acquired from the Earth orbiting satellites. The advances in computer technology have also contributed a lot in the development of more sophisticated sensors capable of imaging the earth in hyper-spectral, multi-resolution and multi-temporal modes. Digital image processing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are the new subjects having direct relevance to Remote Sensing Technology.

The University of Karachi is the pioneer university in Pakistan that realized the importance of Space Science and started a subject of Astronomy in 1952 at the Department of Mathematics. The Institute of Space Science and Technology (ISST) came into existence as an autonomous Research Institute of the University of Karachi in 1994.  After one year, ISPA had introduced  M.Phil. / Ph.D. research program first time in Pakistan.

We are now introducing M.Sc. (Space Science) program at the University of Karachi for strengthening the existing MS / Ph. D. program of ISST. This Space Science curriculum is designed in compliance with international standards, emerging technologies, and to meet the indigenous requirements of Pakistan. In addition, the proposed curriculum ensures the quality trends and the development of dynamic professional human resources. Our graduates of M.Sc. in Space Science will have job opening in SUPARCO, NESCOM, National Institute of Oceanography, Civil Aviation Authority, PIA, Pakistan Meteorological Department, National Telecommunication Corporation, Pakistan Telecommunication Corporation Ltd., Sui Sothern Gas Company and Oil & Gas Development Ltd. etc.

Till today the University of Karachi has awarded six PhDs and twelve M. Phil. / MS degrees to students of the Institute.
