History

Origins of the Centre

Centre for Molecular Genetics was conceptualized by Prof. Dr. Nuzhat Ahmed while she was Associate Professor at the Department of Genetics. With seed-money from the University of Karachi and subsequent financial aid from the British Council and the Parke Davis & Co Ltd (Pakistan) (now Pfizer) and unparalleled encouragement from the International Centre for Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology (ICGEB, Italy), the centre came into being in January 1989. In subsequent years the centre expanded from basic labs equipped for microbiology and molecular genetics to advanced facilities for molecular biology, genetics as well chemical analysis.
