Oceans feed us, regulate the climate, and generate most of the oxygen for life. They also serve as the foundation for much of the world's economy, supporting sectors from tourism to fisheries and international shipping. Healthy marine ecosystems are important for society as they provide services such as food security, halophytes, animal feeds, renewable energy and raw materials for pharmaceutical industry, building materials for coral reefs and sand, and natural protection against dangers such as coastal erosion and floods.
