The 21st Annual Convocation of the university was held on Tuesday, December 15, 2009 at the Valika Cricket Stadium, University of Karachi. It was presided over by Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Pirzada Qasim Raza Siddiqui.

Degrees were conferred on as many as 860 students who did their Bachelors, Masters and MPhil/PhD from the university in 2008. 74 Gold medals were also awarded.

In all 5166 candidates were successful during 2008 examination but only 860 of them turned up to receive their degrees.

“According to the survey by the Times Higher Education 2009, the University of Karachi occupies the 223rd place in the field of natural sciences in the whole world and number one position in Pakistan. The QS World University Ranking 2009 placed the University of Karachi in the list of 600 top Universities. Facts like this make University of Karachi a pioneer in the research and academic world. I congratulate those who are attaining degrees from this prestigious seat of learning. Universities, like University of Karachi encourage the academic culture in the society. I always recommend that all the institutions of Higher Education should actively participate in upbringing of such cultural attitude among the young generation” said the Honorable Chancellor, KU, Dr. Ishrat-ul-Ibad Khan, Governor of Sindh in his message to the Annual Convocation 2009, University of Karachi on 15th December 2009 at Valika ground, KU.

The Vice Chancellor, in his welcome address, said that “We can deal with financial deficit but not with intellectual deficit. Therefore, we are looking forward to the planning of a department of future studies, which can conduct research to tackle with upcoming issues and can plan for the future of this country. Due to its high standard, the research and academic output of the university is well-recognized both nationally and internationally. It has published 276 and 419 research papers in the years 2008 & 2009 respectively which appeared in peer-reviewed journals indexed by Thomson-Reuters, ISI Web Knowledge and ranked at number two among 60 Universities/ Institutions (Public and Private Sectors) of the country. The VC ended his speech on this note that “Looking at all this it can be said with pride that the University has not stopped its journey of academic excellence and it is hoped that it will continue to strive for further progress in the field of higher education and research”.

The Annual Convocation was attended by a large number of VIPs which includes Members of Senate, Syndicate, parliamentarians, diplomatic corps and provincial ministers. Faculty members of the University, Students and their Parents were also present.   The ceremony was formally opened by the Registrar. Later students from various departments were presented by the deans of the respective faculties in front of the Vice Chancellor who formally granted them the degrees. The VC then awarded gold medals to the students who secured highest marks in their departments and faculties. Virtual degrees were awarded to those who were not present at the pindal because a large number of students take their degrees before convocation due to professional urgencies.

Total 74 students received the gold medals, whereas 120 students were awarded the degrees of PhD and 68 students were honored with the M.Phil degree. 630 students received the degree of B.A. (Hons) B.L.I.S., 1352 M.A/M.L.I.S, 22 B.A. (Hons) in Islamic Learning, 107 in MA Islamic Learning, 159 BBA/BCOM/BPA (Hons), 489 MBA/MCom/MPA/MAS, 165 D-Pharm, 39 M-Pharm, 735 BE/BS/BSc (Hons) and 1281 MSc/MCS. So, overall 5166 students received the degrees including 1015 students of the evening program. The ceremony began and ended with the name of the Almighty Allah.
