University signs MoU with the Ministry of Youth Affairs – Govt. of Sindh

"An educated mother can lay foundation of healthy civilized family; this fact accentuates the importance of education of females. The constitution of Pakistan provides full participation of women in all spheres of life constituting more than 50% of the total population, but the literacy rate in females is just 36% as compared to men that is 64%. However, it is imperative that the female youth be facilitated in every respect and sphere of life," these views were expressed by Mr. Faisal Sabzwari - Minster of Youth Affairs, Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Muhammad Qaiser and others on the occasion of signing a Memorandum of Understanding between University of Karachi and Ministry of Youth Affairs, Govt. of Sindh. The Memorandum of Understanding is being signed to promote youth activities in Sindh Province and to prepare much needed infrastructure of hostel facilities for female youth hailing from other districts and provinces coming to attend seminars, conferences and youth related activities through actualizing Government of Sindh ADP Project titled "Completion of Remaining Work of the Visiting Female Scholars and Youth Hostel at Karachi University".

University celebrates the International Day for Biodiversity

In order to celebrate the International Biodiversity Day, Centre of Excellence in marine Biology is organizing a seminar titled Fish and Fisheries on May 30th 2012 at 9:30am at the Khan Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (KIBGE). Submission of Semester Fee

University of Karachi has extended the submission of Semester Fee till June 5. Students who have not submitted there fee yet can submit the prescribed fee along with the late fee of Rs.1000 after verification from the Bursar Office. It is pertinent to mention that the last date will not be extended after June 5th 2012.

University to release bio-pesticides for local farmers for the first time in Pakistan

"For the first time in Pakistan, National Nematological Research Centre (NNRC), University of Karachi will release nematode samples to local growers and farmers which will replace pesticides. Nematodes are small parasitic animals that can kill bacteria without leaving any harmful impact on crops", this has been announced in the concluding ceremony of the three day workshop titled Biological Control of Root-knot Nematode in Vegetables using EPN organized by the National Nematological Research Centre, University of Karachi. The workshop, inaugurated by Prof. Dr. Muhammad Qaiser – Vice Chancellor, KU, concluded on the note that excessive use of pesticides in crops leave harmful impacts. There impacts are harmful for human health and lead to severe human diseases and illness. In order to deal with this situation, use of nematodes can be extremely fruitful. The aim of this workshop was to stimulate awareness, upgrade knowledge and improve skills of participating farmers, extension workers and students on EPN technologies developed by the NNRC for the biological control of RKN in vegetables.

12th Nematological Event at NNRC

"In order to standardize the catalogue and archive genetic associated data and to make it easily accessible to the scientific community, a genetic associated database or genomic library has recently been developed for indigenous entompoathogenic nematodes (EPN) and root-knot nematodes (|RKN) species at NNRC. The fact is satisfactory that more than 100 isolates of EPN and more than 75 of RKN have so far been sequenced in a Gene Bank", these views were expressed by the Vice Chancellor – Prof. Dr. Muhammad Qaiser, Dr. Manzoor Soomro – President Pakistan Science Foundation, Prof. Dr. Shaheena Fayyaz – Director National Nematological Research Centre, University of Karachi and other while addressing the inaugural session of an international workshop at NNRC titled Root-knot Nematodes in Vegetables using EPN here on Thursday. The workshop, mutually funded by University of Karachi and Pakistan Science Foundation, was organized in connection to the Pak-China 17th Protocol on S & T Cooperation. Under this agreement a four member Chinese delegation headed by Prof. Dr. Richou Han, Director, Guangdong Entomological Institute, China visited Pakistan.

Date for Interviews of successful candidates of M.Phil./Ph.D. & M.S./M.D. aptitude test

The candidates who have passed the M.Phil./Ph.D./M.S./M.D. aptitude test are advised to appear for interview in their respective departments on 24th May 2012. It is note worthy that for admission in M.Phil. Program; candidates will have to write one page research proposal on the spot and a two page proposal for admission in Ph.D. Program. Chancellor pays tribute to Dr. Chishti's return to the homeland

Chancellor – KU, Dr. Ishrat-ul-Ibad has invited Dr. Khalil Chishti to celebrate the homecoming of Pakistan's first virologist and former Professor of University of Karachi, on Monday 21st May 2012 at 4:00pm at the Governor's House. The objective behind this visit is to pay tribute to this well-known scientist of Pakistan who spent 20 precious years of his life in Indian prison. The Chancellor intends to extend his greetings on his return to the homeland and ensure complete support in every respect. Vice Chancellor – Prof. Dr. Muhammad Qaisar, Deans of Faculties and senior faculty members will also attend the event.

Moreover, examination forms and fee for MA and Double MA previous and final (Private) can be submitted till 31st May to the bank counter at Silver Jubilee Gate, KU. University of Karachi has also given a final chance to those who were registered in 2005. Such candidates can submit their forms with a fee of Rs.5000.

KU Architecture student wins Bangladeshi Scholarship

Murtaza Quaid Kanchwala, a 3rd year Architecture student of the Department of Visual Studies, University of Karachi has been selected to receive the "Rafique Azam Travelling Scholarship 2012" organized by Atelier Pakistan. Students of the four universities of Karachi offering degrees in architecture, University of Karachi, NED University, Indus Valley School of Art & Architecture, and Dawood University were invited to submit their portfolios. Three shortlisted students including Murtaza Quaid Kanchwala, 3rd year Architecture student at the Department of Visual Studies, University of Karachi were invited to speak briefly about their portfolios at the Atelier event at T2F, where Murtaza Quaid Kanchwala was awarded the scholarship. The travel Scholarship was set up by the award winning Bangladeshi architect, Rafique Azam. The Scholarship enables one student to visit Bangladesh for one week and intern at Rafique Azam's office in June 2012. The Scholarship provides the return airfare from Karachi to Dhaka, as well as all boarding and lodging expenses for the duration of the stay in Bangladesh.

Fee payment of Semester Examination 2012

University of Karachi has extended the last date for the payment of Semester Examination-2012 with late fee of Rs. 500/- from 07-05-2012 to 10-05-2012. The fee should be deposited in the United Bank Limited Campus Branch after the endorsement by Bursar Office.

M.Phil./Ph.D./M.S./M.D. Aptitude Test conducted

University of Karachi conducted the aptitude test for admissions in the M.Phil./Ph.D./M.S./M.D. program 2012, yesterday on 6th May 2012, in which around 3000 candidates appeared for admission against 1040 seats, approximately, in various faculties. The test was conducted in a conducive environment, Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Muhammad Qaisar visited all the faculties and appreciated the arrangements. In the faculty of Science 1112 candidates took the test for 386 seats, in the Faculty of Arts 610 appeared for 260 seats, in Islamic Studies 200 appeared for 55 seats, Medicine 210 for 20 seats, Management and Administrative Sciences 268 for 45 seats and in the faculty of Pharmacy 118 candidates appeared for admission against 15 seats. Moreover, admission test for the faculty of Law will be conducted on May 13th 2012 in the Arts Auditorium.

Pakistan Study Centre organizes International Conference on labour Issues

"It is unfortunate that the labour issues in Pakistan are one of the most neglected one. They revolve around the paradigm of an excessively narrow-based legislative and institutional order. The need is to look into the issues related to labour in a broader as well as specific context. Labours are usually a neglected entity in the media as well. It apparently lead to a correlation between labour and poverty," these views were expressed by the Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Muhammad Qaisar, Prof. Dr. Jan Breman – University of Amsterdam - The Netherlands, Prof. Dr. Jafar Ahmed – Director Pakistan Study Centre, University of Karachi, Karamat Ali – Pakistan Institute of Labour Education and Research and others while addressing the inaugural session of the two day International Conference on Labour in the Age of Globalization, organized by the Pakistan Study Centre – University of Karachi and Pakistan Institute of Labour Education and Research here on Wednesday. The Vice Chancellor appreciated the suggestion of establishment of Labour Rights Chair at the University of Karachi, "such a chair will help investigating the real problems related to labours in Pakistan, it will also provide solutions to the identified problems", said the VC.

Scholarship Cheque Distribution Ceremony

The Students' Financial Aid Office, University of Karachi, is organizing the Mitsubishi Scholarship Cheque Distribution Ceremony on 3rd May 2012 at 11:00 am in the Council Room of Dean Faculty of Arts. According to the In-charge Students' Financial Aid Office, Prof. Dr. Shakeel Ahmed Khan, this is the distribution of first and second installment of Mitsubishi Corporation Scholarship in which 56 students will be awarded the scholarships. The cheques will be distributed by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Qaisar.
